The Institute of Geoenergy (IG), representing the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) through its Director, Professor Ioannis Yentekakis, actively participated in the 1st meeting of the Advisory Committee on Hydrogen in Crete, which was held under the coordination of the Region of Crete, in Heraklion, on October 8th, 2025.

The purpose of the Committee is to assess the possibilities and shape the environment for the establishment of hydrogen technologies as a key pillar of the energy transition and decarbonization of Crete.

Professor Ioannis Yentekakis, as a member of the Committee and FORTH’s representative, highlighted and analyzed the potential for Crete to take a leading role in integrating hydrogen technologies into the island’s energy systems and models, through collaboration between research and business stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the island’s academic, research, and technological institutions, who have been appointed as members of the Advisory Committee on Hydrogen, as well as competent authorities from the Region of Crete.

Close collaboration between all relevant stakeholders is considered critical to overcome technical and regulatory challenges, such as licensing procedures, spatial planning, and integration into the energy market.
