The Institute of Geoenergy (FORTH/IG) is happy to announce that its TWINNING TO SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TRANSITION (TWINN2SET) proposal, submitted under the HORIZON EUROPE Twinning action, has been successfully evaluated. The TWINN2SET project will provide a coherent network that will strengthen interactions between FORTH/IG and the other members of the consortium (University of Stavanger from Norway and IFP Energies Nouvelles from France). More specifically, TWINN2SET will enable FORTH/IG to participate in the European R&I process on Energy Transition. The project consists of a capacity building & mentoring programme in the domains of 1) Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), 2) Deep Geothermal Energy and 3) Subsurface Hydrogen Storage. The work will be complemented by an exploratory project focusing on Hydrogen storage in Geological formations, fostering interdisciplinary competencies at the interplay of a promising energy vector with subsurface reservoir characterisation, modelling and monitoring. Geosciences play a fundamental role in research activities tackling new energy transition themes through the use of underground resources. This twinning exercise aims to bring FORTH/IG the necessary traction to become up to par with the rest of FORTH’s recognised institutes and positioned in the EU R&I map of sustainable energy transition.


The project will be coordinated by Dr. Emmanuel Stamatakis, Researcher at FORTH/IG, having fulfilled a large number of research programs during his career in the fields of Petroleum Research, Renewable Energy, Hydrogen Technology and Environmental Protection, while a high-level Project Steering Committee consisted of Dr. Nikos Pasadakis, Professor at the School of Mineral Resources Engineering & Director of FORTH/IG, Dr. Olga Vizika – Kavvadias, Director of the Scientific Direction of IFPEN and Ms Katrin Peck Lim, Advisor of European Affairs of University of Stavanger has been also appointed to ensure project’s successfulness. Furthermore, an International Advisory Board has been established from Industry (Hydrogen Europe), Academia (Houston University), Research Community (Durham Energy Institute), Venture Capital institutions (Uni.Fund) and the ASSOCIATION of GREEK WOMEN SCIENTISTS, as experts in particular aspects of energy transition.


The project is expected to start in October 2022 having a duration of 3 years.
