Project summary: The TRIĒRĒS project supports the European Commission's goal to grow hydrogen networks across Europe. Based around the Motor Oil Hellas (MOH) Refinery in Greece, it aims to create a major "Hydrogen Valley" in the South-eastern Mediterranean. The project connects production, storage, and transport to deliver 2,410 tons of green hydrogen annually to end users in transport, industry, and energy sectors. A defining feature of this ecosystem is the direct upscaling of the electrolyzer's capacity to 50 MW, instead of the original 30 MW goal. Ultimately, the project focuses on overcoming market and financial barriers to kickstart a resilient regional hydrogen market.

An integral part of the research within the TRIĒRĒS project involves evaluating alternative, non-commercial hydrogen production pathways to act complementarily to mainstream water electrolysis investments. Within this framework, FORTH’s contribution delivers critical literature insights and original experimental data on alternative methods for green and low-carbon hydrogen production. This work focuses extensively on catalytic processes, emphasizing catalyst synthesis, activity, and durability to optimize hydrogen generation. Ultimately, this research establishes a strategic foundation for identifying viable pathways and high-performance catalytic materials, supporting the long-term flexibility and expansion of the regional energy network.
